HaShem

Monday 21 March 2005 - 09:13:23

In 1987, I had the opportunity to go to Israel through the program, Volunteers for Israel. One commits to work for about a month, and the return to US trip can be delayed for six months. I had never been to Israel before, and God provided an open door for me to go. Rather than work on an army base, I chose to remain in Tel Aviv. The VFI, Sar El office had acquired property in Tel Aviv, and they need people to do grunt work. I signed up for that so that I could be in a big city that had bus service to Jerusalem, so that I could go visit family and friends on Shabbat.

I admit that for every night for the first two weeks, I cried when I went to bed. The culture shock, the jet lag, the lack of Hebrew knowledge, the intense spiritual warfare waged war with my spirit. My work during the day was to haul big pieces of concrete to the corner of the construction site. We worked for the sub-contractors on this project. I think that habits on construction sites are universal! As in the US, on this project, every morning the crew would stop at about 9:30am for a break. Some would eat, and some would go out and smoke. We were included to pause with these works, and we shared a bit of bread or whatever snacks we had. One man took a liking to me. He had salt-and-pepper hair and he was a bit chubby and was quite jovial. He spoke no English, I spoke no Hebrew. Yet one day by God's grace, out of my mouth came "Baruch HaShem", Praise the Name! His face lit up and he repeated Baruch HaShem, nodding his head and pointing upward with his index finger. From then on, no words were ever exchanged between us but Praise the LORD, Baruch HaShem.

I have no idea if that man knew the LORD or not, but he did know The Name, HaShem. There is no other Name.

In Psalms 23:3, we are told that The LORD leads us in paths of righteousness for His name's sake - L'mah-ahn Sh'mo. The word mah-ahn in Hebrew means with respect to, for the sake of, in order that. It is used to express purpose. God has a purpose, For the sake of His name, He leads us. It is His responsibility as the Great Shepherd to lead us, not to destruction, but to good. All that His name personifies, He is. Did your spouse leave? He is your Husband. Do you have challenges financially, emotionally, personally, in the family, in business? He is the Judge of All the Earth, He is Wonderful in Counsel, He is a Warrior.
