SURPRISE ENDINGS

On March 21, Adar 13 in the Hebrew/Biblical calendar, Jews from all over the world celebrate Purim. Purim is the holiday that commemorates the time in history when the Jews of Persia were saved from destruction. During the reign of King Ahasuerus, one of his officials, Haman, wanted to destroy the Jews. Haman had been snubbed by Esther’s uncle Mordecai. Mordecai refused to bow down to him, Haman built a gallows, and he drew lots (purim) that designated Adar 13 at that terrible day. God intervened through remarkable circumstances and the Jews were saved. Haman instead, was hung on the gallows. The movie, One Night with the King, is a nice depiction of this Biblical story.
So how does this connect with Jonah and Jesus?
We read in Jonah in chapter 1, verse 7. Each man said to his mate, "Come, let us cast lots so we may learn on whose account this calamity has struck us." So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.” Jonah received a word from God to go to Nineveh and tell them that their disobedience has angered the LORD. But Jonah decided to go against the LORD’s orders and fled from the LORD. He leaned on his own understanding rather than do what the LORD asked him to do. He found a ship that was leaving Joppa near Tel Aviv, he paid the fare, went down into it. Always when we run from the LORD, the sure direction we always go is down. The LORD hurled a great wind…a great storm arose. So Jonah takes a nap.
The captain, who did not know the LORD, went down and awoke Jonah. The crewmates cast lots to see who brought this on, and the lot fell on Jonah. The purim fell upon Jonah. Here he was, backslid from the LORD, blatantly disobedient, and now the lot fell on him. Jonah knew he had done wrong. He knew he was the reason that the storm had come upon them. He tells the crewmates to toss him overboard. At first, they refused yet finally did so. And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights (Jonah 1:17)
Here is Jonah. Good man, right in the sight of the LORD but thought he knew better than God. Thought he knew what course his life should take. He ignored the LORD’s direction and went on his own way. Then a great wind and a great storm arose. Now he sits in the belly of a big fish.
Jonah’s name means dove. I have heard of birds eating fish, but this is the first of a fish eating a bird.
It is not a pretty sight. Brine, seaweed, old undigested fins from other fish, much rotten fish, many body parts of fish, many fish eyes looking at him; this was not a good place. He knew he was in hell, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice.”(Jon 2:2) Yes, Jonah had sense enough to cry out to God. He had nowhere else to go. He is not in a good place. How miserable was his situation. He had brought it on himself by running from God.
Jonah realized that he had done wrong. Yet he did not blame others. He knew in his heart that the wrong was with him. Rather than have a pity party, he offers up a sacrifice of praise, right there in the pit of hell “But I will sacrifice to You, With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD." Jonah could have complained, he could have blamed others but he turned his pain to praise.
“And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. (.Matt. 27:35) They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots. (Ps. 22:18). All four gospels note the casting of lots by the soldiers for Jesus’ outer garment. Crucified naked on a wooden cross outside the gate of Jerusalem – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John described the events of the last hours of the life of our Savior, Yeshua, Jesus. It looked like the worst possible circumstances for Yeshua Jesus, for Esther, for Jonah.
Yet isn’t that just like our Father? In the nick of time, when almost all hope is lost, and if we were honest, when all hope is lost, God our Father comes to our rescue. Whether we have been tossed about by storms uncontrollable and unpredictable; whether we have been tossed overboard – maybe by a mate leaving a marriage, a child or family member suddenly struck down with a disease or death; whether our own sin has brought us to the brink of our own destruction. God our Father never forgets us. He never forgot His son on the cross.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Messiah Jesus:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
And that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil 2:5-11
Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

Israel has over 1300 licensed tour guides. When we get off of the airplane, this is the first face that we will see. In fact, we will see his face for the next 12 days! He is an Israeli, he is a Jew, and he is a believer in Yeshua - Jesus. He has been a believer since 1982 and brings a unique blessed perspective to our tours. Did you know that the wonderful fruit called the pomegranate has 613 seeds, the exact number of the number of the commandments in the Jewish religion?

Almost every tour to Israel has a guide, but most of the them are Jewish. It is very unique to have an Israeli Jewish believer to be your guide. I have been on tours when the guide was Jewish (not a believer) and that made for a most uncomfortable tour. But every day with Zvi turns into a worship experience. Our safety is of utmost importance. He was always willing to help us. It was a miracle that God enabled us to have Zvi, because some big ministries book him. But God gave us favor last year, and we reserved this year with him as well.

When we get off the plane, we are just not left up in the air, with no one there to help us. Zvi is our wonderful guide. The tour company that we use in Israel is called Sar El, and they are all believers in Yeshua, too. The LORD"s hand is upon this trip so please pray and see what He would have you do. The tour company told me that June is the date to have the first part of the deposit in, fyi. That guarantees us seats on the plane.

i just wanted to send out a note about the October Israel trip. If you are looking for a vacation that takes you to the 5-star hotels, that keeps you insulated as a tourist, that you go for entertainment and all the sites to photograph them then get back on the bus---

then this trip is not for you.

Our trip is a pilgrimage. You go because God has called you to come to Israel, you go to get closer to God.
Every morning, we have devotionals - a time of worship singing, Bible verses and a prayer.
If we want to worship at the Garden tomb, we will do so. Devotionals on the shore of the Galilee, worshiping Jesus, this is what this trip is about.
A trip to Israel changes your life, you will never look at the Bible in the same way again.

Vacations entertain;
Pilgrimages involve intimacy with the Lord.

There will be service. In fact, we will tithe our time to the Land. This will involve (pending clearance) a visit to an Israeli army base and bless them with some necessary items; a visit to a Jerusalem hospital and bless the children patients there with beanie babies; we will go up to the Pavillion tower that overlooks Jerusalem to pray; we hope to visit one of Israel's Pro-life organizations; we will plant a tree as almost all trees in Israel have been planted (remember Israel is a desert) and so on.

Thank You that no matter how challenging life is here, You have promised us eternal life. Thank You that this is the only hell us believers will ever have to endure, and even here, we have Your presence to guide and lead us. thank You for not bringing punishment but You give us love. thank You for bringing us here to the close of 2006, we ask for protection upon Israel, for her peace and salvation of Your people. thank You for the privilege of visiting Israel this year.
